Does delta-8 THC show up on a drug test?

Published · Sources checked Oct 4, 2026

Short answer

Often, yes. In a 2023 lab study, six common urine cannabinoid screening kits reacted to delta-8 THC and its metabolites, at levels that varied by kit and cutoff. A delta-8 product can also contain delta-9 THC.

Why delta-8 trips screens

Urine screens are immunoassays: they recognise the shape of THC’s metabolite rather than identifying it exactly.[1] Delta-8 THC is structurally very similar to delta-9 THC, and so are its metabolites, so a screen can react to them.[10] The two molecules differ only in where one double bond sits.

What the study found

Researchers spiked urine with delta-8 THC, its metabolites and other cannabinoids at 20 to 1,000 ng/mL and ran six commercially available screening kits at two cutoffs each: 50 ng/mL, and 20 or 25 ng/mL depending on the kit.[10]

Tested in urine Did the screening kits react?
Delta-8 THC and its metabolites, including its carboxylic acid (11-COOH-delta-8-THC) Yes, with selectivity varying by kit and cutoff[10]
Delta-10 THC and HHC carboxylic acid analogs Yes, varying by kit and cutoff[10]
CBD itself No[10]
Two CBD metabolites (6-OH-CBD and 7-OH-CBD) Yes, varying by kit and cutoff[10]

How long it shows up

Not well studied. The study above tested screening kits with spiked urine, not people, so it gives no detection window. This site does not carry delta-9 windows over to delta-8 as if they were measured.

What a screen does not settle

In federal programs, a positive screen goes to a more specific confirmation test before anything is reported.[1] Whether a given lab’s confirmation separates delta-8 metabolites from delta-9 ones depends on that lab; ask it directly. A delta-8 product can also contain delta-9 THC, which any THC test detects; only the product’s lab report says how much.

Legal status does not change what a test detects. Delta-8’s status is changing under federal law in late 2026 and already varies by state, and some states ban it. This site covers detection only and is not legal advice.

Before you rely on a number

A study of screening kits is not a prediction for one person. Only a lab test can tell you your result.

Questions

Will delta-8 cause a positive screen?

It can. The six urine screening kits in the cited study reacted to delta-8 THC and its metabolites, with sensitivity that varied by kit and cutoff.

How long does delta-8 stay in your system?

It is not well studied. No study cited on this site measured delta-8 detection windows in people, so this site gives no range for it.

Can a lab tell delta-8 from delta-9?

Confirmation tests are more specific than screens, but this site cites no study of which labs separate the two. Ask the lab that ran the test.
